Bio
Short bio
Mala Fama is a cumbia band from San Fernando, in Buenos Aires province, founded in 1998 by Hernán Coronel. With Ritmo sustancia (2000) it became one of the bands that defined cumbia villera, and today it still gets three generations of malafameros dancing all over the country.
Long bio
Mala Fama was born in 1998 in San Fernando, in the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires, when Hernán Coronel started writing his first songs. With Ritmo sustancia (2000) and Para vos basuura (2001) it became one of the bands that defined cumbia villera: two keyboards, pizzicato and an unmistakable voice. Television followed, from Pasión de sábado to Videomatch, along with songs that are now popular anthems: “La marca de la gorra”, “Made in Argentina”, “Guampa chata”, “Soy Mala Fama” and “La resaca de tu amor”.
After a break, the band returned in 2008 with Si tenés, mandale mecha!!!, followed by Pero qué te pasó en la cara..?? Whats..??? (2010) and Lo peor (2013). In December 2018 it celebrated 20 years at Teatro Ópera with Andrés Calamaro, Dante Spinetta and Marcela Morelo as guests, and in 2019 it released the live album 20 Años Agitando el Avispero. In 2020 Hernán guested on Fito Páez's “Ey, you”, and the Sesiones Musikeras, with Homer El Mero Mero, Sara Hebe, Malandro and John C, were nominated at the 2021 Premios Gardel for best tropical group album.
Today Mala Fama counts more than 180 million views on YouTube and more than 860,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, releases new songs such as “Pequeños Pitufos” and “KIERO JODER” (2026), and Hernán has joined MasterChef Celebrity on Telefe. On stage, about ten musicians; in front of it, three generations of malafameros.
